Philip L. Leggett, MD, is a board certified laparoscopic and bariatric surgeon in practice in Houston, with more than 35 years of experience in the field. His work as a minimally invasive surgeon is internationally recognized, and he’s the author of numerous medical publications.

After getting his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Leggett earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston before completing his general surgery residency at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans.

A Houston native, Dr. Leggett is passionate about giving back to the community he calls home. He is a lifetime member of the Livestock Show and Rodeo, Lifetime member of the Steer Committee at HLSR, and a Lifetime member of the Board of Directors at HLSR. He is an Emeritus Board member of the Boys and Girls Club of Houston. He is the current chairman of the Board at HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest Hospital and serves on the HCA Gulf Coast Advisory Council. He is a Board member of the Mary Jane Hamilton Foundation. He has spent the last three decades pioneering the innovation and adoption of advanced laparoscopic techniques. He started one of the first Fellowship programs in the United States to mentor and train surgeons to become minimally invasive surgeons and has mentored over 50 young surgeons from across the globe. He continues this mentorship today. He also serves as Program Director for the Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship at HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest Hospital.

He’s a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, The International College of Surgeons, SAGES and ASMBS, as well as clinical assistant professor of surgery at the UT Health Science Center at Houston and at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Dr. Leggett was recognized in 2023 with the Ashbel B. Smith Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
